How to rent a villa in Bali: what to check before you pay

A short checklist, from the people who rent one out. It applies whether you stay three nights or a year.

See the house, not just the photos

Ask for a viewing if you are on the island, or a live video walkthrough on WhatsApp if you are not. A walkthrough shows the rooms as they are today, the state of the pool and the garden, and how the house is laid out. Every photo and video on this site was taken at the villa it shows; ask for the same wherever you rent.

Agree the dates and the rate in writing

Before you pay anything, the arrival date, the length of the stay and the price should be written down, with what is included. For a short stay that is a per-night price for your exact dates. For a long stay it is a monthly rate and the term, for example three months at IDR 160,000,000 at Villa Ceria. With us the terms are agreed in writing, in English, before you move in.

Know what is in the house

Check that the villa is furnished and equipped for the way you will live in it: beds and linen, a kitchen with oven and fridge, a washing machine, air conditioning in the bedrooms, and an internet connection fast enough for your work. Ask about the pool, the garden and who looks after them.

Keep one number for problems

Things break in a tropical house: a pool pump, a water heater, a gate motor. Know who you message when they do, and whether that person actually knows the house. With us it is the same WhatsApp number you booked through, +62 859 6254 1534.

Where the house is

Canggu is on the south-west coast north of Seminyak. Ngurah Rai airport is about 20 km away, 45 minutes to over an hour depending on traffic. Lanes in Canggu can be narrow and busy; ask how far the house is from the beach, the main road and the places you will go every day.
